Hello all. I am attempting my first fiberglass project. So far I think I did what I was suppose to. Here is what I am doing. I am makeing a mold of my rear panel on my 05 pathfinder. The on on the rear hatch. So I have it all covered .. Put the first layer of glass on and let it sit. It has been sitting for about 2days now.

Here is my problem. I went to check on it this morning and it looks good about 90% of it is dry but some of it is still tacky .. Did I do something wrong ? I am thinking maybe it just still needs to dry so I put a heater next to it but I am not sure. What do you guys think?

Being in NY with this weather this time of year, you should have prolly added a bit more hardener.  It actually cures with temperature so putting a heater on it would definately help.  2 days is an extremely long time and impractical to have to wait for fg to cure.  Unless you put a very little % of hardener then it will just take longer to cure.

Thanks. Maybe I did not use enough hardner like you said. Well lets see what happens.  Thanks for the reply.

I'm sorry to say then that the there isn't enough hardener in the mix and the project may need to be redone. A strong mix should not take more than 2-3 hours tops to cure. If it is taking longer than that, I'm afraid to say that your FG isn't mixed properly and will most likely have weak resin in it. If it is for a sub box expecially, I would consider restarting the FG and adding more hardener to compensate for the colder weather and higher humidity.

If it is just a cosmetic piece, then it might be enough to just add another layer of FG to reinforce what is cured ok.

Well I kinda figure that was going to be my options. After looking over what I had and some thinking the section that did not dry corectly would not directly affect my enclousre. So I added some more mat and resin ( with the correct hardner ) and it is working now. This is my first layer so I will be adding a few more before it starts to even take shape so I think I will be ok.

Thanks again for all your help guys. I will have some pictures up soon but if this comes like I am picturing it in my head damn is it going to look sweet.

Here are a few pic of what I am doing. Basicly the whole enclousre is going to be fiberglass with some MDF for dividers and some support. I took the factory rear hatch panel and tried to make an exact mold of it so I can reproduse some of the lines on the inside the truck. I am not looking for window rattling bass just a nice sound and good looks. How mamny layers of Fg do you think I should use on the panel. I am thinking maybe 4.  I plan on using 2 10" subs and having the amp in the middle of the 2.

Here are a few pictures of what I have so far. All comments are welcomed good or bad.

BTW I did get to fix some of the soft spots I had posted about earlier. They well not be holding any weigh so I glassed over them again. Some of the aluminum foil got stuck as you can see. I still have to sand it all down and make it smooth but I want to finish up the enclousre part so that I am not finishing something that is not going to be seen.

Here are a few more pictures. This shows what the original panel looks like on the truck and a mock up of what the new panel looks like.

New panel. There is still alot of work to do and I still have to think up some mounting point and the speaker and amp placement.

How's the fitment? Since you molded from the outside of the panel, any layers you add on should be to the inside of the FG so it strengthens without getting too big.

Keep those pictures coming and do not hesitate to ask questions we can help you with ok?
