hello, some time ago I read an article on how thieves are using laptops to steal high end cars. there was a particular article that stated that the thieves were able to tap into the car lights and unlock and steal the car that way, I dont remember what model car it was but i know I read it somewhere. Does anyone know what I am talking about. Can anyone provide a link to that article or website?

Heard of the first generation Nissan smartkey being "hacked" by thieves with laptops.  I believe it was a version of bluetooth(correct me if I am wrong) and the thief would sit near by waiting for the owner to approach the car and be able to grab the coded signal and later re-broadcast as if he had an actual key.  Can't remeber where I saw this, but will see if I can come across any info.
a true canadian eh!

The version I heard was that the Eastern Europeans had laptops with source codes for the RFid keys that unlock the car when you approach and release the steering lock and start the car automatically. The encryption level isn't very good, so you've just bought a new S Class, go into a Cafe in say Prague and a guy is sitting near you using a laptop. you go to the restroom, come out and find your car gone.

For the increased threat/risk of a theif hacking the RFID or bluetooth signal .. the "smartkey" is not worth it in my opinion... others will disagree, i'm sure.

Someone has cracked the keyloq algorithm used in most code hopping security systems.  This happened quite a while ago and is NOT widespread at all.  You have a better chance of having your vehicle flatbedded then to have someone break your codehopping security.

I belive David Bechham had a vehicle stolen in that manner (although it has been a long time since i read about it).

Turns out I was part right, part wrong.

Beckham did have some vehicles stolen using laptops - but they believe it was a brute force attack:

The keyloq info is here:

And apparantly its keeloq....

Thanks for the info Kevin although knowing some footballers here (= young vastly overpaid and stupid) he probably loaned it to a friend who left the keys in it. By the way, it can't be Bluetooth, too much power drain surely?

Huh?  Football?  I thought Beckham played soccer????   :)  haha

I would think a hacked version of blue tooth wouldn't be too bad - minimal antenna strength will increase security and reduce current consumption, and sleep modes and what not could get the current draw down pretty low.

No Kevin he doesn't play football, Wayne Rooney plays football, Beckham is a wuss and he plays like those US pussy football players. Remember young Kevin,  football (soccer) is a gentleman's game played by thugs and Rugby (US footballs dad) is a thugs game played by gentlemen. Now you've got me going I'm going to shaft the fool with the '02 Explorer.
