Automotive lighting is federally regulated and not state regulated.

All types of lighting that does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 is illegal in the US.
The specific law is in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 571, Section 108.
If anyone is interested, you can look it up on the US Gov't Printing Office Website, scroll down to 571.108 for the section of interest.

you are absolutely correct......if your talking about the "rules" that the auto makers have to follow and comply with. hmmmmm

not the "aftermarket" which is what this thread is about.

US safety standards are public law and apply to all parties associated with the manufacturing, importing, distributing, selling, installing, or repairing motor vehicle and motor vehicle equipment.
If they do not comply, they cannot legally be used on public highways or sold for that matter. That is one of the reasons you see declaimers on certain products stating the they are not for sale or use in vehicles operated on public highways.
All lighting accessories that comply with this safety standard are marked with the letters "DOT" as specified for the particular equipment or accessory. Being aftermarket does not make it legal or illegal. Compliance is the only determining factor for its legality.

Good Lord and I thought we had silly rules over here, you've really put me off putting HIDs in my Gallant now. Incidentally usage of front or rear fog lamps is illegal here  unless it's foggy or falling snow.
