alpine mrp m1000 overheating

I recently installed 2 12" 2010 model type r dual 2 ohm subs, in a custom ported downfired box, and an alpine mrp m100 amp. The subs are wired at a 2 ohm load at the amp. I have 4 guage power and ground wire running to it. It will play fine for about an hour, being played a little hard, but withing reason, then, ponce it gets really hot, the bass output will cut in half, and if i keep playing it, it will cut in and out, and the amp will go into protect mode. I had this same amp on 2 12" treos at 2 ohms, and it never once got hot, barely even got warm. Are the type r's demanding too much power out of the amp or what? The subs handle 650 rms each. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Disturbin' Tha Peace

Have you used an ohm meter to verify that they wired at 2 ohms?

I have the same subs as you however. their Are Two different models 1222d 1242d .maybe its not wired correctly. You could run them mono on the high fonics amp. But I put my money on the wiring 1993 sdv

they are wired correctly. I have the 1222d. I have two of them. they are wired to 2 ohms. They actually read 2.5 ohms on a DMM.Disturbin' Tha Peace

Are both subs wired at 2ohms? If they are and your running them both parallel then the amp is running in 1 ohm. Just a thought not much was specified on your setup. A guy had the same problem and he was running it at 1 ohm on a 2 ohm stable amp. Hope this helps. Please forgive me I seen you said in your first post that it is 2 ohms at the amp. One of your subs may be going bad maybe. Each voice coile is rated at 250 watts RMS @ 2 ohm giving you 500 watts RMS a sub when both coils are wired in parallel. So yours must be wired in series to bring the subs up to 4 ohms then wired parallel at the amp. Try testing each sub by itself but wire it to 2 ohms and see if the amp gets hot. I have done this myself and found a customers sub was going bad. I don't think it's anything with the amp or it would go into protect but these amps cut half the power when they get to hot so it's hard to tell. Thats why I want you to try each sub by itself.skinnman

so hook only one sub up to the amp, running at 2 ohms,  and see if the amp still gets hot? Whats the likelyhood of having a bad sub? The two subs are brand new from a authorized dealer. The amp i got used, the guy said he only had it for a year.Disturbin' Tha Peace
