Did you unscrew the visor? My visor holds the roof liner in pretty tight.

well... i was pulling at the roof liner right above the mirror.... so no visor screws are even around it.

It will be very rigid because it's attached onto the roof by friction fitting it on. You may need use something to pry it with but make sure that it's wide enough that it won't cause a wrinkle in the roof liner.
