I recently had the misfortune of finding out that the ignition switch in my 2000 Chevy cutaway chassis motorhome could not be replaced under warranty due to the presence of a dealer installed aftermarket alarm system (Automate 435).  Can they do that!!!  If anyone has info re: the laws on this matter please post!

If the dealer installed it, they should back up the warranty on it. I'd send the bill to the dealer that installed it.

Hey RNewman

Ever hear abot the Magnuson-Moss warranty act?!?

Everybody should read and understand this to their benefit !

http://www.mlmlaw.com/library/guides/ftc/warranties/undermag.htm

There's a paragraph that says :

"Tie-In Sales" Provisions

Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty.

This is just a small sample of the entire act.  I suggest everyone downloads it, prints it and frames it to hang in their shops.  One note though, this is an American act and cannot be implemented under Canadian law but it could be a wedge to gain your cause.

Have the car dealer put it in writing that he refuses to warranty your vehicle because an aftermarket product was added and have him sign it.  Then you'll see if he's all hot air.  If he signs it then he just signed up for a legal battle which most dealers don't want.

Prepare your future. It wasn't the lack of stones that killed the stone age.

Hey RNewman

Yes I'm still on the same subject !

Seeing that the Automate 435 is a DEI piece, check out their answer to your concern:        http://www.directed.com/contact/faq.asp?no=8#8
