You guys do have different opinions.  What about price ranges?

What are the best subs within certain price ranges like $200-$300 and $700-$1000.

Which once have a good sq with a small demand in power. less than 500w rms?

Ravendarat:

i already have Boston z components, they are pretty good for $1000.  I have never heard the utopia sub, is it pretty amazing?  also, can you run it in a sealed enclosure.  I am considering running 4 focal 5ws subs and 1 focal 11" utopia sub.  Crossover the 5" subs at 200 - 55Hz and crossover the 11" at 55hz and down.  I have a three way crossover on my deck for this, but I might upgrade to a passive crossover.

Ideas?

Deck -     Eclipse CD8443 - $475
Speakers - Boston BAZ5 - $1000
Amp -      Alpine MRV-T420 - $400
Car -      1988 PLymouth Colt - $450, it's been rolled!

Ya, I didnt see that you had the bostons already, great choice. You can totally run the utopia in a sealed enclosure and I actually heard the 11 in a sealed box and it was the best sounding car sub I have ever heard, plain and simple. I also heard a cavalier that had 8 focal 5ws in them and I was very impressed with it. If I was you I would use a passive crossover and run the 5's at 70hz to 150 hz and a 11 or 13 from 70 hz down. I would then have my componets cover everything from 150 and up. Also make sure you take the slopes into account when setting up your subwoofer crossovers. What kinda car is this going in

Raven,

Yeah, i guess crossing those 5'2 over at 70hz wont work them quite as hard, though they are rated down to 55hz. While were at it, Question about front soundstage:

I have 5 inch boston z's up front, and I would like to go to a three way system up front, if I use a set of boston pro 4" seperates, and go with a 5, 4, tweet up front, do you think that would sound good? I know a 6,4,tweet is ideal, but i already have the 5's.  Also, could I use the provided crossovers for the fours and the fives, or would i need a new crossover designed specifically for a three way system?

thanks

You can definatly use a 5 4 tweet set up, infact I have done it before using all boston pro speakers and was pretty happy with it. I would definatly either make a new crossover for the 3 way set up or by a set of crossovers made for a 6 4 tweet set up and use those. For example by a set of boston crossovers made for the 6 4 tweet pro set and use those. It wont cost too much and will work perfectly fine. You may just need to add a cap in to the 5 inch speakers to raise the bottom up to 150 hz or so. And ya the reason why I said to crossover the 5 inch subs higher because even though they play down to 55 hz they arent very effective down that low and the larger sub will do that perfectly fine.

I am not surprised you didnt find them on the net, I am sure they are not on to many sites. For really high end speakers like that your best bet is to go to an authorized dealer.

I looked again and I found a z6 for 650 on ebay.  I didn't know it was short for boston acoustics.  what an idiot I am sometimes.  That's the best component speaker for in that price range?  what's the price range of the MB quart in?
