If I turn the switch off and depress both buttons at the same time, the lights flash 15 times. Turning the switch back on and pressing button 1 causes the lights to stay on for several seconds, but the car does not start. Pressing the button again produces 9 flashes.

OK.   You will need to reset it with the method I posted each time it fails to start.  First thing to check is make sure the orange 12guage wire on the remote starter has a good connection to the vehicle.  Test light should light up on the orange wire when you hold the starter to crank.  Also it might help if we knew what kind of vehicle you are working on.  If it is installed with scotch locks I suggest removing them and soldering.

The orange 12 gauge wire on the remote starter wire does deliver 12 volts when button 1 is depressed (ofter resetting). Still not activating the starter, however the fuel pump starts.

Check to make sure that the wire that the orange wire is hooked to also is getting 12v when button 1 is pressed.  In other words you are checking to make sure your connection is good.

yep, i traced the wire, it is soldered to a really big(like 8 gauge) yellow wire, which looks like it might be the start position wire of the key. it is an oldsmobile cutlass supreme, 1995-96(i forget which)

according to the wiring harness info on this site, the yellow is the starter signal wire. so technically, it has the signal to start the car, right?

Check the Vats (passkey) bypass.   Try putting the key in the ignition while using the remote starter.  This might not work either but also check all the connections and resistor value.

hondaman, I assumed by what you said before that the car is not cranking over?  Is that the case or is it just not starting (running)

Jeff, 2400 command starts (all command starts up until this year) do not have have a tach learning procedure.  You have to program it with the remote to the appropriate cylinder setting.  Also the car should still cranks over and start even if there is no tach signal or setting is wrong, but the starter will hang on until crank time has expired.

ok. It works when the ignition key is inserted in the ignition. Some how it needs to see the resistor on the key before it will start. The unusual thing about this is that the key never had to be in the ignition to operate it before.
