Again, the vehicle has a class II databus system. This means that there is a wire that is controlled by the door. If you are not going to do it right and use the T-harness or expensive non retention harness, then you must run a new ignition wire to the main ignition harness where the pink wire will be located.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

the expensive (expensive being a relative term) non-retention harness (GMRC-01) supplies you with an acc circuit which also operates as a RAP circuit (meaning your aftermarket  radio stays on till you open the door) as well as the chime speaker module..... if you put a dollar value on the time it takes to relocate the factory radio to the trunk the non-retention is actually a cheaper alternate while giving you more value for your money...... we dont even stock the old T harness any more.......

and no, you cant hook it up to the door circuit, you have to go to the fusebox or the ign wiring harness and grab acc there..... (if not doing it properly)

I have had my 01 cavalier that I hooked up using the stuff from cructhfield.com. All I did was buy the basic wiring harness for 5.00 and it came with all the instructions and a wire that was my 12v to the cd player. I had to run the red wire to my fusebox and attach it to a fuse (which it tells me which one I think it was the wipers). Simple. Once I did all that I no longer had a door chime and the radio doesnt stay on when I turn off the car, but hey the whole thing works no problems at all. I thought the chime was annoying anyway.

you cant use the red wire from the harness you bought.  you have to splice into another accessory wire preferably one at the ignition, in order for the radio to turn off when you turn off the car.  otherwise it will turn on and off when it wants too.   and i agree with whomever said it, that the relocation harness is the best way to go.

The red wire was the one I ran to the fuse box and hooked it to the wiper fuse.

Well sure the relocation harness  sounds to be a good route to go, I dont see the purpose spending $80-$90 for a wiring harness that makes a after market deck work with stock. My opinion, GM just made a money maker move for people who want a better sounding stereo upgrade. I would rather go the

i replace about 20 cavalier drivers door pin switches a month here... it's a little push in plastic switch and thats why your radio isnt shutting off.... they are only about 6 bucks, pick one up and replace it...... part # 22600228

then the RAP feature will work, like it should have with your OEM unit.....
