I've talked to a couple of different people on the subject and gotten the same basic awnser, "cut".  But nothing more than that.

Question is this...when installing a HU into a 79 blazer with the OEM style dual knob radio what all needs to be cut, do you still need to buy a install kit, how exactly do you cut the plastic face on the dash that goes over the HU, does the HU go back in after or before the plastic face?  I am planning on rewireing everything, and i mean everything on the radio.  If you have a step by step and some photos i would appreciate it..i know someone out there has to have pictures of an OEM system they have replaced with a HU.

I appreciate any help anyone can give and will be checking back soon..thanx

There are kits available, but you still have to cut the dash. You should pay for this to get done if you don't have an airsaw.

have you taken the radio out yet? im assuming not, when you do youll see what needs to be cut. there should be a circular hole for each knob then a rectangle in teh middle. of course for any din size youll have to cut out a bigger rectangle to match the cage of the new radio

The metra kit comes with a metal bracket to support the radio's cage and goes behind the factory plastic. It also comes with a platic plate that goes infront of the factory plastic and will cover any gaps. You can use the metal bracket as a guide, it works well as a guide because it can screw right to the factory screws and give a good outline. Be careful with the airsaw and don't let it vibrate the dash too much as it can cause the instrument needles to snap.

I once did an install in a late-70s/early 80s Chevy pickup. I just used a fiber cutting wheel to cut out the knob supports. Pretty much every wire will need to be cut, and if I was doing the install, I'd think real hard about maybe running new speaker wires. It would really only take a few minutes per side to run new front speaker lines.
