hey dwarren. thanks for your tips. very helpful. I may have misled you or you misunderstood me-the hum comes from the subs not the amp. its just a 40-50hz constant tone that starts when the volume on the deck goes up-doesnt increase with volume or rpm and dont stop until the amp turns off. When I turn it back on its ok til the volume goes up and it gets stuck on 'hum mode' again. Hope this helps you visualize this. how would i hear a hum with the speakers not hooked up unless it was the amp itself-its not the amp humming its the subs. Thanks again

Maybe it doesen't know the words...... This may help...
It won't be the subs. They just can't up and produce sound themselves, so that rules that out. It is coming from the amp.
1) Disconnect the RCA's from the amp- does it still do it?
2) If so... it is the amp.
3) Plug RCA's back into amp, unplug RCA's from deck. Still doing it?
4) If so, then check the RCA's, they may be pinched somewhere.
5) Try another source.... do you have an iPod type device that you can plug directly into the amp?
This may help somewhat...
