i diffently agree here with forbidden and others.the best i've worked with and learn from are guys that have been in the biz from a young age and that remain open to learning. don't get it wrong books are diffently needed along with hands on experince. no test is going to make you a better anything. but unfortunitly that paper will get you places easier. even without the knoldge. i will never understand how and way that works. but i guess people just feel safer seeing that paper.

i know when someone comes in my shop and wants a job its to the bays they go to show me what there made of. that paper will have no effect on there job either way. i usally can tell someones level of experince after a days work.

so i would ask if they got paper showing steady double digits in the biz. thats worth more than a test.

MECP has several levels. The basic installer test is good for backgrond mobile electronic knowledge and safety, but it does not make you a good installer. It may help you get your foot in the door as some form of educational accomplishment or to prep you to get a job. The Advanced test is designed for persons with installation experience, at least a year . You have got to know alot more than book smarts to pass the test. The Masters test is only held by the people who are truly dedicated to the art of installation. These are the people who really know their stuff ( the so called best of the best) There are not many who hold this certificate for good reason, I here this test is a mother to pass. I would challenge anyone who has passes the Masters test would be considered
"The Man"   SO it depends on what level or cert they have. I know alot of installers who won't take the exam because they think they are too good for it. Ultimately, If your customer's keep spreading the word your a BAMF installer, it really doesnt matter. At the same time, just because you've done something for a long time doesn't mean you any good at it.

i agree with everybody mostly mecp doesnt mean you know anything except safety basic practical electronics and tool use. but trust me the first time i saw a FNG  grinding on a piece of metal without safety glasses the whole shop came unglued yelling at him. so mecp maybe just a pice of paper but it does teach new people about shop basics. i have been in for 7 yrs and am currently trying to get my basic installer test out of the way now that i work for a chain store i have never had it required but its only $ 35 to take. and from what i understand mecp will mail the test to your local library to be proctored. and from what i understand techguy688 is 100% correct if u meet a "Master" level installer thats The Man

I know this is old, but i'm gonna reply anyway. I've been installing for 6 years now, and don't have my MECP certificate, because its expensive. However, I do spend a good bit of time fixing stereos that MECP qualified installers put in. I've read the book that has all the info in it about what's in the course/test, rattled the answers off in my head, and decided I was quite content without the paper. Like everyone says, it just depends on the installer. Question is, does the alarm work? If so, great, if not, you MAY have found a certified idiot
