Hi,
I'm having trouble installing an Clifford Intellistart 4 to my VW Polo Mk 4 1998 with manual transmission.
Could anyone advise me of the colour of the Tach wire which is required for the engine starter.
This could be one that the UK installers could answer as it's a UK car.
Or will a Clifford RPM or Alternator sense module be required?
Many thanks, Mo

Hi Joe,
Thanks for your reply.
The Polo is a mk4 1998/9 model 1.6GL 5dr.
It has a 1.6 8v engine.
Thanks, Mo

hi mo,  the autodata that i got doesnt give the exact rpm wire at the instrument panel, but here are the wires that come from the ecu to the instruments,GREEN/ blue         white   blue/white     and violet, if you cannot get a tach signal from the instrument panel, then you can get the same signal from one of the fuel injectors, injector 1 wire colour is green, and can be found at pin 7 on the ecu, it is on the right hand side of the ecu harness and it is the top row,
i am also a technician so if you have any engine trouble let me know, and i will do my best to help.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I was just hoping to connect to a negative coming from the coil, I'm only used to cylinder type coils like on my old Mini to get a tach signal. The Polo has a different type of coil and some type of ignition amplifier and I'm not familiar with that.

Connecting to the ECU worries me and this is the 1st install I'm doing regarding remote start. I have installed a couple of alarms before: a Selca and a Microscan so have a little bit of knowledge, but I'm no expert.

Where would you say would be the safest point to connect to to get an accurate rpm signal for the remote intellistart and blackjaxx?

Would it be a good idea to use a diode in the sensing wire from the alarm so that only a signal can flow from the rpm source to the alarm and not the other way just as a precaution so as not to fry the ECU?

Many thanks, Mo

does the ign coil have 4 wires going to it on the multi? or does it just have 2 wires going to the coil.

set your multi meter to ac and test the coil for a fluctuating signal when the engine revs change, this wire should read a steady neg with the ign just on

Hi Joe, sorry for the delay replying.

It has 2 wires coming into the coil from the ignition amplifier and 1 connection from the coil to the distributor.

Thanks, Mo

I think that's the main HT lead from the ignition coil to the centre of the dizzy. (Haynes manual)

Is that still suitable? got me thinking due to the possible high voltages involved.

i think you have to connect it direct to the wire, as you  will not beable to do this to the high tension wire beacuse you cannot link into that, just hook it into the pulse wire from the coil to the cap
