I was thinking, would it be possible to use an atx power supply, I.E. 550watt one and just use the 12vdc connector.

Of course i would have to figire out how to switch it on withouit a motherboard.

its because some of these a rated for up to like 25amp.

i know i should really be using 40a but i will remove components to get it to work.

Thats what i posted in that thread. the way to switch it on without a motherboard attached is by shorting out pin's 4 and 6. they are the green and black one.. any black wire in combo with the green will work.
also you can use something we use in the Tech Shop @ Work called a ATX PSU Tester. basically shorts it out for you without having loose wires.
