I'm assuming the FCC has something to say about this and they're only available in the great white north?

they look just like the old 791 / 3.5 remotes except that they have a taller antenna.... i find them actually just a touch too big for comfortably sliding into a back pocket

I just read on DEI's website (I believe...) where they say:
"*FCC-Legal Remotes - No Risk of $11,000
Forfeiture penalties per violations!"

These are great but if yr  a mile away and there is a violation to yr car how fast can you run a mile? I keep my car as close to me have a viper 5000 and the range is more than adequate for me.New Viper 5900 1 Mile Unit - Page 2 -- posted image.

Well obviously you wouldn't be able to reach the car to investigate an alarm in time. But that kind of range for activating the remote start would be fantastic!

Range has always been an interesting conversation piece. Like ringojam said you better have the legs of sub four-minute-miler Steve_Scott to see who's messin' with yer ride when it's a mile away! But when you work downtown or at a factory or a mall it's reassuring to know that you did indeed lock the doors and armed the sytem by checking your remote without having to wait 'til your break to jog down to your car to confirm it.

Even cooler to be able to remote start your car from inside the aforementioned locations without having to jump on a Segway and try to get to the door nearest your car and need to "chin" the remote praying that she starts (only to find out that you should have brought an ax with you cause it didn't start and it's encased in an inch of ice! - not cool).

They're starting to ship as we speak and will be available shortly at official Viper/Clifford dealers in north-america. There were limited numbers sent to dealers across Canada for beta testing in mid-July. Check back often with your local shop.
