See how long it takes you to remove the steering column cowling to access ignition wiring then come back to us. NB I's all CAN on that one. Ah Gary you are now living with all the tax exiles I see, I take it the other line refers to a movie?  Because of you I saw Zohan; I thought Anger Management was funnier.

The Golf should be the same as the Jetta, minus the trunk release.
They're not as bas as the other European cars. I still charge a good bit extra, but they're a good bit easier than a BMW or Volvo.
I'm going from the Jetta, but this should be the same for your car:
--After you undo the steering column shroud cover, you can see the backside of the ignition switch, with the wires coming out.
There appears to be almost no room to work there, but if you unplug the harness, cut a little of the tape away, you can stretch out the wires just enough to make a connection.
--Brake was right at the brake switch.
--There are two separate parking light wires, left and right. I think they're right behind the headlight switch if I remember right.
--I did one of these cars with voltage sense and it worked fine, but another one came back and I had to hook up tach. There's an unused rubber grommet above the gas pedal, and it was easy enough to run the tachomteter wire through there.
--The doorlocks (and trunk, if the Golf has one) are only available inside the driver's door. It actually wasn't too bad at all to run the wires through the boot and into the door.
--You'll of course need to give up a spare key, with a universal bypass module, for the remote starter. No one makes a no-key-required bypass module.
--The remote control on the factory switchblade key doesn't work while the engine is running. Don't forget to hook up doorlocks from your aftermarket system, so you can get into the car when the remote start is running.
P.S. Where in Massachusetts are you? I'm in Malden.

A nice thoughtful post wait till you get asked "what's a by-pass module?" incidentally as Mr. No.1 cynic I find the E46 BMW the easiest of all to do,especially if you keep to the driver's side where ALL your wiring is, don't go near the glovebox and use the grey valet key.  PS You didn't mention the long screwdriver to access the 2 front screws in that cowling, or holding the lock wire for total close, and yes it's easy to get into the doors, I only slacken off the panel, if you remove it wrong you will damage the do0r LED  and puddle lamp and may set the door catch cable incorrectly. Incidentally if the vehicle doesn't have electric windows (there were a few euro cars floating around in that spec.)   you can access the locking from the underdash body control.

Hi, do you know where is the best way to order a duplicate transponder key for vw golf 2002?I have only one switchblade key.I tried one key locksmith place, but they wanted to charge me almost $100 for cutting and programming. Is it a good deal, or I can find it cheaper?

Bluntly that price is cheap, a dealer key here, without the remote controls would be about $200. Don't use the switchblade key in the by-pass, the one that works is the 556U and wire it up per the instruction for European cars.

what's the difference between 556U and Model 791-Universal Learning Bypass Module? it's important because the first costs about $50 while the latter one is only $20.I looked at the design of both and they seem pretty much the same. If they both do essentially the same thing, why paying more???
