Sorry in advance for the novel, but I'm going to try and be pretty descriptive... (Oh, and thanks in advance for any help)
I recently bought a pair of Ungo SR7000 Alarm/RS combos from sonic and I have a couple questions/issues with them. I had the first one installed into my wifes 1996 Grand Caravan "on the side" by a personal known pretty well locally and done tons of installs, he was recommended to me by a couple of different people who spoke nothing but praise of his installs. He also happens to work at a car audio/security store during the day, but I had this done on the weekend at his house. He said the install went fine, except that he couldn't access the programming options for it to make a couple change. He told me he'd get a hold of the bitwriter from work and make the changes in a couple of days, which was fine with me. The unit works good and does every thing we need it to, but it doesn't always successfully start the vehicle on the first try, he says it's due to the .6s start pulse, he wanted to change it to the .8s setting and we wanted the "time to run" setting changed from 12 minutes to the 24 setting. No big deal really. Well he ended up not being able to borrow the bitwriter from work, and ended up just buying his own, and getting the memory/chip upgrade. We tried to used it last night and the bitwriter just brings up an error saying "Cannot read from unit", or something along those lines.. He pulled a panel on his dash and plugged it into one of his own viper units to verify it works, and he said he used it with no issues on a viper install a few days prior. He's telling me that his bitwriter (998T) only works for vipers and a couple other brands, and that even though my Ungo is a dei that it's not supported by his bitwriter and I'd have to use the ungo bitwriter to make the changes. My manual references a "Clarion Pro Security Programmer", but I haven't been able to find anything by that exact description, although on ebay I have seen a couple of things described as "Ungo Bitwriter". I'm leery of this being the correct answer for my issue, being as they're all the same 998T part number. So my questions are as follows..
Is my installer full of s**t?
Do I have to have a specific bitwriter, or ungo branded bitwriter to access my SR7000?
Is there any thing that has to happen to my unit before it can be accessed, such as the key cycled or the arm/disarm cycled or something retarded like that?
Is there anything installation wise that could keep me from being able to access the programming, either manually or with a bitwriter?
I still have another new in box SR7000 unit I'm wanting to have the same guy install in my truck (1994 Silverado), but I need to resolve this issue first though, as I know 100% for certain that my truck will not start with a .6 second pulse, I would need the 3 second setting, so if an Ungo specific bitwriter is the answer to my problems then that is the path I will go. I'm willing to take the vehicle(s) to a different shop if they can make my changes or if it's an install error that's causing it.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions any of you are able to give.
