We are trying to troubleshoot an Astrostart Series 1000 in a 95 Mazda Millenia. It worked fine until the car battery went dead. We've been able to reset the door locks so they work by following the remote reset instructions, but when the start button is pressed, a couple of relays click, the lights flash once, then nothing. Starter never even tries to kick over.
I've checked the hood switch, and made sure the 12 volt and grounds are ok, but am stumpped where to go next.
any help is appreciated. and no I do not have an install diagram but if someone has one, it may be very helpful.
Thanks,

I will try to help but am unfamiliar with astrostart.

I can only think of 3 logical possibilites and these assume none of the astrostarts wires were touched with in any way.

1) the hood switch is bad, bent or misaligned (maybe during the battery charging or if it was replaced someone hit the pinswitch

2) the system needs to be programmed for tach-learn etc. (a surge or disconnecting of power to it might have knocked out the previous programming)

3) the unit went bad (perhaps someone connected the cables reversed for a second or, for the same reasons as #2)

Let me know if any of these suggestions helped. Thanks

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, checked the hood switch as you stated.  As for the jump, when the battery died, can say I am sure that cross connect on the jump didn't happen, but also noted that in the instructions (afterwards) that the Astrostart switch should have been turned off, which wasn't done.

As for #2, programming.   I don't have any install docs, and user manual is pretty useless for programming, as they don't even tell you what the dip switch layout is.  How do I find out how to reprogram?

Locate the brain, find the LED on it. Attempt a remote start, after it fails, count the number of flashes. Its a diagnostic code of sorts. I tried to load a picture of the page that lists the error codes but NO LUCK. I'll check back to see what you got.

Hey Kar tuneman.

I like your signature.

I guess as long as you understand why you should only use a DMM to test circuits and use a fuse on anything you connect to power, you can avoid damaging things and fires lol

There is no substitiute for real world experience but it still can't hurt to take a certification test.. It seems there is limitless stuff to learn in this industry as I find out everyday.

Peace

Well, Pushed the start button on the remote, it flashes rapidly while the button is depressed. Relays click, lights flash once, then no flashes on the LED.

Ya need to look at the led on the brain... I't probably lost it's tach sense... occasionally one of the dip switches will move [usually someone screwing with it...] and if it gets left in the up position the unit is just in progaming mode and the vehicle won't start... the other possibility with that is, the on/off switch..see if it is plugged into the brain and turned on... I have yet to see one of these units actually fail.. if ya have problems tommorow , just give me a shout... May need to set it to automatic transmition too...

Yup, was looking at the LED on the brainAstrostart series 1000, 95 Mazda Millenia -- posted image.
As for he DIP switches, have no idea what they do, as I don't have a schematic or anything?
I've got 3 up 5 down. Starting from the outer edge of the brain pc board 5 are what I would call down, or in the position towards the board edge, the next 3 are up, or facing the inner part of the pc board. (My son has the car at school right now, so I can't go check immediately if those are on or off positions, sorry).
I also looked at the tach wire. I must say, it's shaky at best. Doesn't look like the installer had his best guy installing this. Solder joints are not great, and the tach wire is strung pretty tight from the firewall around on the AC piping (which can get pretty hot), and loosely taped into the tach sensor.
Hmmm.
