i checked a link from the asianwolf thread, and the site, asianwolf sells a LED Scanner

Which is supposed to be a fairly good visual deterrent. i want a security system for my car, but right now i cant afford what i want to put in it.
i know its not going to offer anything other than some flashy lights, but in the mind of a theif will something like this deter the assailant?
i live in a small town, and i know there are some car theifs in town here, i dont know how 'pro' these guys think they are, but i know at least a couple of the vehicles they've 'apperently' stolen had nothing for security. do you think its worth it? it will be only temperary until i get enough funds to purchase what i want.

You only get what you pay for. You might be better off just installing a 12 volt flashing LED. It would more closely resembe an alarm LED and possibly fool a thief. If they test the car to see if it is an alarm, they may realise it's a fake. Let common sense prevail. Don't install anything into the car until you have an alarm to protect it.

too late for that lol. maybe my next vehicle, but when i got my current one, it wasnt fully mine, so i had to twist some arms to get them to allow me to stick a deck in there.
but you are right about the common sense. but im not about to rip out a payed for installation and have to wait till i get an alarm system. as anyone with a system and no alarm, i'll have to take my chances.
thanks for the insight though, another perspective helped.

You can also try and get your hands on some window stickers indicating an alarm is installed in vehicle. A lot of manufacturers supply them with alarm systems. See if a local stereo shop has any extras they can give you. Just remember them when it comes time to buy something.

People don't even pay attention to alarms any more. How many alarms go off and you or I or anyone else don't even look? You need the car to be undrivible, not just make noise. "clubs" don't work, you can cut thru a stering wheel in seconds. bolt cutters work even faster. A kill switch and a brake peddle lock is the best way. And a alarm can detter a crook, but a "pro" can deal with a alarm as fast as he can steel your ride. Don't sweat it too much because if a "pro" really wants your ride there is nothing you can do. He could back up to it with a rollback or repo rig and be gone before you can say, Man someone jacked my %$#%&*!%$%^&  car. Good luck with your project.

Thanks speedway, but i dont think too many of the kids around here would be that 'pro', but i know what your saying and thats why i dont even know if i aughta get an alarm. but im not in the city for more than a few hours every few weeks, so the potential is low for it happening there.
but i appreciate the comment :-)

Just to let you know, I'm working on a theft deterrent that is comprised of a very realistic hologram of a frothy-faced Doberman complete with growling sound effects.  "Dobie" can detect what side of the car the perp is on and will always face that direction (actually he can face all directions at once but the punks don't know that!).  The hologram beast bounces visciously around the car's interior, slathering on the windows, and scares the would-be thiefs into the night.

I'll let you know when it's ready.

;)
