Did a internet search and it seems like well over half of people who had remote starters installed in their newer Volvo XC70 wagons had problems with them and were eventually removed (including the car engine dying when driving down the road).  Most blamed the complex nature of the XC70 systems not liking the remote starters, but it's difficult to tell if this is a reality or just a few bad apples.  Volvo dealer always recommended removal and against installing in the first place, but that's the dealer for you.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on installing a remote starter in this car?  If this is just stories I'm willing to give the install a try, but if there's validity, I'll pass.

Thanks in advance for any input.

if installed properly and bypassed properly, it should be problem free.

remember a remote start mimics as if someone was turning a key in the ignition cylinder (or pts) so as mentioned if done correctly, no problems should arise.

If you have a regular key that you turn the ignition, do it. No problem.
If you have the fob which you insert into the dash and push button to start, god bless your installer. lol Its not too bad but it does require the removal of the fob piece and soldering of the factory circuit board. If I were you I would ask for the best installer in the city and has AT LEAST MECP advanced/2 years of experience. That is probably where you are hearing the horror stories from. Newbie installers touching them and burning up the circuit board.

Thanks for the replies.  Yep, it's the rectangular fob that inserts into the dash and you press the button next to it to start.  So that's the issue then...

Is there a specific type of bypass for this kind of car/fob set up?  Any place I can read up on it?

idatalink has a data module that will do pretty much all feature but the bypass itself.

the fortin can-sl2 also works for this vehicle. i use can-sl2 units on lots of cars and they are very easy to install/program.

Thanks, I'll see what I can find out on those.  Any specific model numbers, I'm planning to do the install myself and would appreciate anything I can read up on.  Do they both require soldering on the PC board for the fob?

Looked up the Fortin can-sl2 but it isn't capable of bypass.  Is there a specific bypass module for the XC?

Just looked up the iDataLink instructions for the ADS-ALOM-VO unit and saw what was involved with the soldering.  But it seems this unit needs a key fob to be dedicated to the bypass unit.  Is that the case with all the bypass units for this car?
