What is the best out of these two? or are they pretty similar?

I know dei makes them both, but i wanted to know how they compare if anyone can help.

Both function on 434mhz.
The 790 is a superior piece - greater and more stable range. It uses a special companion remote
The 554T has more features (bells and whistles). It uses a standard two or four button remote for a companion (green LED).

Yeah they are both 2-way LCD
The 790 has two seperate zones for trunk and hood whereas the 554T shows both as the same zone on the transceiver.

Careful you'd want a 554R to be truly comparable to a 790xv right down to the older, larger brain and mini relay satellite.
You were probably reading my post about the remotes, and it pertains to the old white 478V remotes. Those flakey remotes were included in the early shipments of Responders, and were replaced by the 479-series about 3/4 of a year after the Responder were introduced. All later production 690xv/790xv/880xp/680xp shipped with the new 479s, and all of the new 791xv/591xv/881xp/581xp have them. The new units don't suffer from the circuitry problem, are slimmer, and don't consume batteries as quickly (unless you like the backlighting).
I too would vote for a 791xv or 881xp if a RS system is what you want since they can be had "back door" for the same cost of a retail 554R! You get the added benefits of the new smaller brain and tiny satellite relay module which makes concealment so much easier, plenty of channels, and a rock solid unit IMO!
HTH!

ill take the 554t over the 790xv, cheaper and more reliable w/ the remote....and it comes w/ 2 remote, (1-lcd,1-4button). it works the same, why not get the cheaper one...huh?

Where would be the best place to get the 791xv online? besides ebay. I want to buy the alarm this week and just want to get a good solid one. I really dont care about all the bells and whistles. This will go into a 95 mustang that only has electric mirrors, doors and windows are manual so i dont care about extras as much. I just want one of the 2 way alarms, something that wont be that much of a hassle. I will be installing this myself and all i have is a few hours in a friends garage.  By the way the first alarm i tried installing( a prestige model) was a pain, instructions where very vague. I did get a viper lower model and instructions seemed alright but i gave it to a friend as i really want one with the 2 way remote. You guys have been great help, I hope i can make the decision tonight. sorry for the long post.

95stangw,
You can have a look at the install and owner's manuals before you buy a DEI unit! Go here:
http://www.directed.com/guides/default.asp
You say you don't need too many bells and whistles, but don't say if you need a remote start (RS) or not. For obvious reasons, RS units are more involved as far as install goes. At any rate, consider at least installing lock actuators in the doors to really get some return out of your alarm investment.
You will find that difference in street price between say a 690xv (alarm) and a 791xv (alarm/RS combo) isn't that much ~$30-40! I do not believe we can post where these can be had on this site, but if you private message me I can tell you where to find some on-line besides the auctions.
