get an FM mod or a AUX input - why bother with all that other crap?

I don't see how my response is any more useless than this one.  I just told you the best, easiest way to do it.

well first of all, forgive my terse response I did not intend for it to be reporoachful, I was simply frustrated at the response. second, the above response, at least the fm transmiter portion is a twenty dollar addition that is the most common means of adding a peripheral component to a stereo. you suggested I get rid of my head unit, my processor and buy a new source unit. while that would certainly be an effective solution, at the expense of two perfectly functioning units, and the price of the new hu, plus the adapter, that seems like well over a thousand dollar swing just to add an mp3 player. since the original post is asking about the soundness of one idea, that would cost about 95 dollars. I feel like your reply was not really aimed at helping. but as I said at the beginning, I didn't  mean to be harsh, and I thank you for at least looking to help me with my problem. If you have any input as far as that goes, it would still be very much appriciated.

your best option is FM mod...its the cheapest and most effective way to get mp3 into ur system...

u will be wasting ur time with source selectors and adapters to bypass ur HU and Processor.. why would u want to do that and let ur ipod go directly thru the amp? its crazy.... go Fm mod at least that  way ur mp3's might sound like an fm station but its not gonna be far better  off..that way u can still adjust ur EQ to overcome any shortfall of signal from ur ipod thru the Fm MOD...

Yes we aussies know a thing or two about 12 volts..

See if you can get an aux-input with a pass-thru so you can still connect your processor....

You could try an Audiocontrol FOUR.1I. It has an auxillary input and the equalizer is defeatable. http://www.audiocontrol.com/MobileAudio/Products/InDash/Four1i.html

Heres what you would do:

Connect the front and rear rca preouts from your processor to the input of the Four.1I Then connect the iPod to the auxillary input on the four.1I. It has front, rear, and sub preouts plus a volume control and fader. When you are using your Clarion CD player you can use the button on front that turns the equalizer off. When you want to use your Ipod you can push the auxillary button on front and use the EQ to tune the sound from your Ipod a little. You could leave the volume control on the four.1I all the way and use the Ipods volume control. You could also leave the Ipod's volume control all the way up or until it starts to clip (probobly a better idea) and use the volume on the front of the four.1 instead.

Another option might be to use the aux. input on the Four.1I only and not the preamp inputs. Then find a switcher that can switch between the front, rear, and sub outs from your Clarion deck and the four.1I's preamp outputs. I don't know where you would find such a product though.

This is a pretty good source switcher but it dosn't have a sub preamp input or output...

thanks for the suggestions customburbon, I think I have a solution that will still allow me to keep my sub control, I'll just run the two signal paths, separately, with 2f/1m rca y's at thhe amps. So in effect I could send both of the signals simultaneously, so to prevent that, I'll wire a toggle switch on the remotes of each source, cd player and EQ, and thus only the one I'm using will power up the amp and I will simply turn off the other source. that swithc you found would be the ideal thing, but without a sub signal, it's unfortunately worthless. you suggested the FOUr.1, any reason other than defeatable eq, is it a god unit. I was thinking about he clarion eqs744. 7 bands, 6 outputs at 7volts. any thoughts

another thought, use this signal switcher for the front/rear signal and then use the splitter rca for the subs. since this unit will turn off one source for the other, I would n't have to worry about the possibility or having two signals or need any comlicated switches.
