Thanks for clarifying that one. I thought that point would have been obvious, but then again the consider the topic of this thread.

Legal or not, you would still get sued.  Just because you put a warning sticker on it doesn't make it legal.  what if that person couldn't read?  What if they were foreign, and couldn't read english?  What if it's just a little kid playing around?  Take how much your car is worth, then figure what you would get sued for, then do the math and find out if it's worth it.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with focusing on deterrents such as electrical discharges using capacitors.  I've considered wiring up this bug zapper using self-adhesive electrical tape installed under my Jeep's door handles and in other inconspicous spaces.

The zap won't kill you but I guarantee it to get your attention while realizing a second attempt wouldn't be worth the zap.  I'm trying to imagine the worm that calls the police to complain that he got zapped while trying to get into someone else's car without consent.  BUT, I do remember  being infuriated enough to call the police after this guy ripped me off 20$ when he didn't come out with my bag'o weed.  I vividly recall the police telecommunicator asking me if I was serious with a laugh... but I can't thnk of anything more dispicable than withholding the hippy lettuce from a nice guy such as myself.

I say zap with restraint.  I almost wanted to say "ease up on the guy that started this post" but I enjoy dishing out a bowl of humility when something strikes me as dim-witted and obviously foolish.  I just don't find his inquisition as foolish, he was just asking.

The only problem is what happens if a child or an elderly person "accidentally" gets shocked. Now lets say that person has a heart condition or a pacemaker. Now lets say they go into cardiac arrest. Then lets say the car's owner gets arrested for manslaughter or like charge.

"what happens if a child or an elderly person "accidentally" gets shocked. Now lets say that person has a heart condition or a pacemaker. Now lets say they go into cardiac arrest."

The more I think about it, the more I find the probability of someone inducing cardiac arrest from the shock of a bug zapper (by the way, the unit I'm talking about is sold at Harbor Freight for four dollars & is shaped like a tennis racket and operates from 3 Volts).  I've shocked myself numerous times and I'm certain that the shock produced by this unit is NOT enough to cause irreparable damage to any part of the body accept maybe your eyeball.  I am, however, not discounting the possiblity of some dumb ass opening up my car door with their eyeball.

And... just to make sure, I called my wife (cardiac RN) & my father-in-law (cardio-thoracic surgeon) and proposed the hypothetical situation of a death induced by this zapper and they both didn't even have to think about it.  Both of them responded with a concise and resounding "No".   And for some time now, pacemakers have advanced and evolved into units which are impervious to such "accidental" occurences with electricity.   They would be more succeptable to incurring health risks from stray RF produced from any cellular phone.  I've personally witnessed a Porsche 928S4 go into immediate brake failure the instant a cellular phone call was made from within the vehicle emminating from every phone model we sold at the time (problem solved with a veritable plethora of aluminum foil layered over the brake computer module in the passenger floorboard).

I'm getting much more long-winded than planned but my point being that low voltage shocking deterrants pose no more risk than walking across the street.   Go spend four bucks at harbor freight and get the zapper and zap yourself, I promise it won't hurt, it will smart and make you not want to do it again, but it causes ZERO damage.   I've shocked myself accidentally numerous times.   But let me be perfectly clear, I'm not even considering using anything more than a 3 Volt bug zapper and NOT a Tazer of any sort.  I've also considered fabricating a pepper spray dispenser to be activated upon component removal.  Keep in mind that I drive a Jeep Wrangler with the top off eight months out of the year and it I've had my share of people rubbernecking into the interior space.  I don't like it.  If they get shocked opening my door handle... good, they had no  reason to pull it.

I still can't fathom someone accidentally pulling my door handle, but I might be tempted to double the voltage for people that imbecilic as to "accidentally" pull on ANY portion of my vehicle for ANY reason.  They deserve to experience a reminder for their stupidity.

Truth be told:  the implementation of this idea most likely won't make it into my Jeep, I get better results just bringing my dogs with me.
